Call for Ideas

I'm writing an article about word play. I need some help. Those of you who glance at this every once in a while, please leave a comment about some of the things you enjoy doing to play with words and sounds. I'm supposed to have the article done by the end of this week. I'll post it when I finish it.

  1. I enjoy cooking, baking and being outdoors. I know you like to cook too so maybe you could find something from that area to 'word play' on. Good luck Joseph!

  2. Okay, Joe, here are a few things I've done with my students:

Some of these ideas you will recognize. So...what's the article for? Do we get to see it?

  3. Wow. Your article is close to the one I was going to write...I'm glad I decided not to write it now. :)

When I taught my junior high creative writing class this summer, we wrote short poems using our word pools (which we collected from a variety of books) and the poem starter, "I am...". Then we took our poems outside and wrote them on the sidewalk with sidewalk chalk. (I can't remember if you gave me that idea or if Claudia did, but I loved it!)

  4. When I think of word play, three books came to mind: The Prize Winner of Defiance County (Ryan), Punished (Lubar), and Sleeping Freshmen Never Lie (Lubar). The more you can expose kids to word play, the more they will begin to notice it on their own. I liked the lesson we had on words at CUWP with the (in)famous Bulbous Bouffant video. I also used to have my students search for word play in the media (especially advertisements and place names). But you need to be careful because there is a lot of naughty word play out there (thank you Lady Gaga)! Here's kind of a fun blog: http://thatspunny.blogspot.com/2010/08/om-nom-mom.html. Good luck on your essay! I want to say something punny, but it just ain't coming to me tonight! =)

  5. Andria, I'm loving the sidewalk chalk idea. I just happen to have a whole bunch of it out in the garage...hmmm....

I think I'll post a little writing every so often...some polished...some rough. And I welcome any comments or criticisms or cupcakes you care to throw my way.
